The sports health and exercise sciences center (SADCE), sponsored by Eli Lilly, Lederte, Yaucono and Bausch & Lomb, arose from the joint efforts between the medical sciences campus at the University of Puerto Rico and the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico. In 1987 they established a cooperation agreement and an employment contract with the Albergue Olímpico. The following year it began its work in the Center, under a multidisciplinary framework of health, to offer free services to the students of the school specializing in sports, to the public in general and to the Federated athletes of the Olympic Committee. Puerto Rico thereupon became one of the few countries to have an environmental monitoring station for the optimal planning of sports training in conformance with the weather conditions, for a greater effectiveness of the work of physical preparation.
The Center is an integral part of the Department of physical medicine, rehabilitation and sports health of the school of Medicine of the medical sciences campus at the University of Puerto Rico. It has a team of 29 medical and health-related professionals.
The Center consists of several service units for athletes, which are:
- Primary Services
- Athletic Injuries
- Exercise Physiology
- Oral Health
In 1990 the Center was appointed as the health custodian of the athletes of the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico. Mr. Walter Fronteras was the first director of the SADCE. Currently Dr. Enrique Amy (second Director) has been in charge of the new Center in the Albergue Olímpico, which is equipped with the most modern facilities.
